CIR at the Edinburgh International Science Festival 2017

Researchers from the MRC CIR reveal how our immune system works at the Edinburgh International Science Festival, April 11-14 2017.

Scientists from the MRC Centre for Inflammation Research at the Edinburgh International Science Festival, including PE&C leader Donald J. Davidson, ran our popular children’s workshop on the immune system at the National Museum of Scotland, Chambers Street, Edinburgh.

With an overall attendance of around 80 children, mostly aged 6 to 11, and 40 adults, the workshop participants enjoyed playing the “Rash Decision” ball pit game, taking part in our “Denny and T-Team” activity and completing an Immunology Stickers sheet while learning more about how immunity, vaccinations and allergies : Your immune system is an AMAZING army that protects you from infection and keeps you healthy… but how do vaccines work? What happens to cause allergies? Are there any treatments for people who suffer from allergies?

Excellent feedback was collected at the end of the workshop: ‘I would like more time but still great!’, ‘It was fun! Good!’, ‘I enjoyed it all’, which is a fantastic reward for the 17 volunteers who ran the activities in these four days of fun and science.
