Donald enjoyed piloting his new “Meet the bacteria” interactive primary school liaison module this week, for the University of Edinburgh / MRC Centre for Inflammation Research.
In the first session, we covered basic information about bacteria and our relationship with them, then the children did a hand washing experiment, before sampling themselves and their classroom onto agar plates.
In the second session we looked at and discussed what they had managed to culture and reiterated the key messages. Using an electronic voting system we were also able to assess their baseline knowledge and the effective delivery of the key learning points.
It was a little chaotic at times, but a lot of fun and worked very effectively.
